Good trimmer with one major draw back
I got this trimmer as a birthday present last year, and I was really excited. I’ve grown up with Dewalt tools and have had a few passed down to me which are still great products. I’ve wanted to leave this review for months now but wanted to be able to say that I’ve used it for a full season. My only issue with this, is that the trimmer will kick anything you’re trimming back at your legs. Grass, weeds, little stones (those are the worst) anything that’s in the path! I’ve never had this problem with any trimmer in the past, and I didn’t want to say this. I’ve tried changing hand positions, changing from right side to left, different angles (to the point where I’ve strained my back because it’s not a natural body position) and I just get coated from the shins down. It seems like it needs a bigger shield to block more of the debris. I don’t want to hate on this but this is the most annoying thing, and that it makes me dread when I have to use it. Dewalt, you do so many things right, but this issue makes me hate a product that you make, when most of the time I’m looking for reasons to buy more of your products....even when I don’t need them at the moment.

I like that it is battery operated
I think it is much better than gas driven ones, quieter, lighter and you don't have to mix gas. The directions for load the spool are not very user friendly in my opinion and more times than not I have to take it apart and re run it manually kinda defeats the purpose and convenience of have a spool if you have to take it off rerun it everytime. Battery last about half as long as it says it does. Which really isn't a big deal you should be able to weed trim your whole yard in 20 minutes anyway. but that one time that your run out of battery at the end and you have to wait 6-8 hours for it charge up is kinda irritating. Battery operated is definitely the way to go.

Wife loves it
Love it starts every time if battery is charged. No carburetor to get gummed up, and wife to complain it doesn’t start. Had one bought 2nd one for camp. Great product for home use maybe not for commercial use.

I bought this 3 months ago and I haven't been dissapointed yet. With all the rain this year, I've gotten plenty of use with this tool around my house. Battery life easily enough to finish my yard. I'm eager to see how long it lasts, based on some other reviews.

My solution i use one weed eater for a while and when the battery dies i just use the other letying the motor on the first rest.

Ive got a whole line up of 20v products
The trimmers
The blower
The hedge trimer
And the chain saw.

And i find them all to be awsome tools.

I just want to find cleaning instructions so i dont damafe my tools.

And how much rain can they handle .

I love my dewalt yard tools.
I use them when preforming yard maintnance for customers.

Not good
Less than a year old and worked well - now the entire trimmer head is loose and I cannot get it tight so when running the entire assembly turns around. Some how the battery is also jammed in the trimmer and won’t release. Going back to gas.

Solid cordless trimmer
I was reluctant to jump from gas powered to electric but we were in process of purchasing our first home and the yard was very small.

I have several Dewalt 20V Max tools- driver, drill, jig saw, and reciprocating. I considered every major manufacturer's cordless options, but kept coming back to this because I had a stack of 20V Max batteries already. Our last rental home had over 2/3 acre, our new home has just over 1/10th. I figured I'd always have a backup battery in case the included one didn't last through cutting the grass.

Was I ever wrong. Not only did the included battery last through trimming 150+ yards of chain link fence on the old house, it easily trimmed the rest of the yard, and even ornamental grass- all on the a fully charged 5.0 ma 20v battery. That same battery has become the go-to for all of my other Dewalt 20V Max tools- especially on the saws.

My only complaint and the only reason why I didn't give five stars: the trimmer string is a little lightweight for its power, and I had to re-spool twice after trimming the chain link fence. Heavier gauge line or a poly blade would be a good option for this tool.

I'm looking forward to adding the hedge trimmer and blower in the spring

Easy to use. Perfect for residential yard work.
Found this trimmer on sale at Home Depot. I purchased it unexpectedly but couldn’t pass up the deal ($200 for both. Trimmer works great and is perfect for my yard. I get about 45-60 minutes of continuous trimming out of the batter, which includes edging the lawn and mulch beds.

How long is the 20V MAX 5.0Ah Cordless Lithium-Ion Brushless String Trimmer?
JBo on Jan 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes from end to end when ready for use the length is 67-15/16". With battery off the unit is 66" long. This was done putting the rotating hub on a hard surface and measuring from that surface vertically to the end. Should be +/-1/8" or better accuracy.

Will the new flex volt battery make it stronger and run longer?
A shopper on Jul 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes , it will increase the run time dramatically; it will not necessarily make it that much stronger; the flex volt battery will just deliver a more consistent output to the motor for a longer period of time; in other words the trimmer with a fresh charged 5.0 Ahr batt will have the same cutting power that a flexvolt would have after 30 minutes of use; the bigger flex volt batt just increases run time.
Will it work with impact battery?
A shopper on May 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes , it will work with any of the DEWALT 20v batteries including the new Flex volt battery.
Just got the Dewalt 20v MAX 5 Ah String it! Although I was wondering If I can use my other 20v MAX 3 Ah batteries I use with my Dewalt Drill and Skill Saw without harming the battery?
Jamey T on Apr 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes I think it is fine to use it. It just won't last as long when you use it.
Is the battery new or reconditioned when purchasing the reconditioned tool?
Tigerbacker70 on Apr 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The batteries are not guaranteed to be new. Generally, the batteries are the same batteries that were returned with the trimmer. The manufacture has tested the batteries and guaranteed them for a year.
Could anyone help me how to replace the string.
Rene on Aug 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Turn spool clockwise to unlock as shown in Figure 9. The
white nub inside the spool will rotate away from the spool
window to indicate it is unlocked.Pull the spool straight out to remove.
Remove any dirt and grass from the spool and housing.
5. First, wind new line in the channel of the spool closest to the
holding slots (10C) as shown in Figure 10.
6. Place the end of the cutting line
FIG. 11
(10A) into the retaining hole
Wind the cutting line onto the
spool in the direction of the
arrow on the bottom of the
spool. Make sure to wind the
line on neatly and in layers. Do
not crisscross (Fig. 11).
8. When the wound cutting line
reaches the beginning of the
holding slots (10C), cut the line
approximately 4 inches (106 mm).

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 120 days.
