My First Battery Lawn and Garden Tool
Two main reasons prompted me to buy the Makita XRU08Z-R 18V bare tool trimmer. First was that I have been wanting one that does not require a long cord to wind and unwind and drag about my lengthy yard and one that requires gasoline and all of the maintenance that goes with it. Second, was that I already have several Makita 18V LXT tools including an impact driver, drill, circular saw and recip. saw. I really enjoy using the other four which I have had for a while and have accumulated numerous batteries and a charger. I guess there is a third more minor reason and that is since battery technology has improved quite a bit over the last few years it seemed like a natural direction to go since I am steadily replacing more corded tools with cordless.

When the Makita cordless trimmer there was a very minor learning curve since it was my first battery powered yard tool. I had to cave and resort to reading the user manual for the settings. Once I was ready to test it I noticed that it did not have the wire edge guard. Since I edge my property almost every time I mow. I contacted CPO about this and received a reply soon after. They initially offered the option of return and replace which I thought was totally unnecessary so I requested the missing part to be sent. Since CPO does not actually ship tools but the tool manufacturers do, you have to know what model tool you have and the missing/defective part number. KEEP YOUR USER MANUAL. DO NOT TOSS IT OUT. Long story short CPO took care of the issue and I had my missing part before the end of the week.

I primarily use a Stihl FS56 for my trimming needs so using the Makita which is a bit smaller and lighter took some adjustment and getting used to. This will serve as a backup to my Stihl until it dies, which might be a long time, or until gas gets prohibitively expensive. It has a soft start or at least appears to so you don't get full power right from the get-go like most corded and gas trimmers. It works quite well for edging albeit a bit slow but I am usually not in a hurry and like to do a neat job. The bump feed worked fine and the soft start is actually a nice thoughtful feature if you have to trim around delicate areas where you might damage plants, trim or other things with a more aggressive trimmer.BTW I use 5 amp hour batteries with this tool. I could probably get by easily with 3 amp hour batteries. I think 6 amp hour units are available now.

I have only used this tool once so my review is based on initial impressions. In summary I found it a tad weak but it got the job done and was well balanced and easy to use. I am not trimming large weeds or very tall grass which I would not recommend. I leave that to my Stihl if the need ever arises. I have bought numerous tools from CPO and cannot think of a bad experience I have had. I also pay a little more and stick with the pricier name brands like Makita, Milwaukee, etc.

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 120 days.
