Hitachi DV18DBFL2 18V Lithium-Ion Brushless 1/2 in. Cordless Hammer Drill (3 Ah)

Details
Covered by Hitachi's Lifetime Lithium Ion tool warranty, the DV18DBFL2 Hammer Drill features Hitachi's Brushless motor technology that delivers more power to the motor by minimizing unnecessary energy loss through friction and heat. Managed by a micro-processor chip that efficiently delivers current flow to the motor, Brushless tools experience longer run time between charges, increased power, and extended durability with essentially no maintenance. Hitachi's signature ergonomic design for the tool body makes it extremely well-balanced and comfortable for extended use. It is an ideal hammer drill for drilling into concrete, boring large holes into wood or driving lag bolts, yet it's 22+2 clutch settings allow the user to adapt to low torque applications like hardware installation or furniture assembly.

  • Powered by Hitachi's 18V Lithium Ion slide-type batteries for fade free power and lighter weight than NiCd batteries
  • Brushless Motor Technology for higher efficiency, increased run time and longer tool life
  • Professional grade power with 620 in/lbs of turning torque and up to 1,800 RPM with 0-27,000 BPM
  • Single sleeve ratcheting 1/2 in. keyless all metal chuck for quick and simple bit replacements and secure holding power
  • 22-stage and 2 clutch settings delivers 22 torque settings, a drill mode and a hammer drill mode to properly match the torque to the application
  • Optical trigger switch for a more responsive variable speed actuation and wear resistant trigger assembly
  • Built-in LED light effectively illuminates dark work spaces
  • On-tool battery indicator displays the amount of power remaining in the battery pack to avoid downtime
  • Metal belt hook so the tool is always close at hand
  • Ergonomic grip, center balanced design and lightweight at 3.5 lbs (with battery) to reduce fatigue during extended or elevated use

Absolute Best for the Price!
I purchased the DV18DBFL2 cordless hammer drill after having used a smaller Hitachi cordless drill for many years and I found that I needed more power and hammer capability on some jobs. I've been impressed with Hitachi's quality and toughness for years, and this hammer drill does not disappoint. Great power, great durability and great value - at about half the price of a comparable "yellow" tool. Strongly recommended!

The drill itself is very comfortable, and has great design with it's plastic/rubberize overmold. The chuck is solidly installed with minimal run-out. The mechanical clutch setting is smooth, clicks into place with authority, and designed for great visibility. The high/low switch on top is a little tight but may loosen with use and is acceptable. The light is on the bottom in front of the underwelming 2bar battery guage. I find that the light itself is a little on the dim side on my particular drill, and I find that the 2 bar battery guage is underspec compared to other manufacturers at this price point. My real gripe is the trigger and directional side to side switch has too much wobble. The wobbly trigger makes it hard to control it's variable speed even at low speed setting, and the directional switch detent has too much play to stay in place with a slight jolt from my knuckles when performing a task. I also find the performance of the mechanical clutch to be wildly inconsistent. The setting itself has a very positive locking feel, but I find that in small screw installations in lower setting the mechanical clutch causes to many strip screw holes. Sometimes I find at setting 1,3,6,7 and sometimes 10 to be almost the same. I don't know if it's because it's new and needs to brake in a bit. The mechanical slippage in the lower clutch setting is wildly inconsistent that I feel it's either too much or too little suddenly locking into place causing strip screw holes.(this may improve as the gears, springs, and lubrication inside the drill mesh into place with a little more consistent use, hoping anyway but for some reason I keep on thinking that maybe the spring in the hammer option is making progress in my small screw application to be almost unusable???). 1st time hammer drill buyer, but I sometimes find myself grabbing my big old clunky non hammer drill B&D for small screw application. This Hitachi is a nice looking drill and compact as well as robust enough to use all around the house. The set I bought comes with two 3amp batteries, a solid case, and a decent charger that keeps my projects moving.

Compact Power Good Value!
I like how small the drill is, and its very sensitive trigger switch. I don't need the hammer function, but that was how the brushless combo was bundled.

I can't figure out how it has so much runtime (especially with the 3 Ah battery!). Very cool!

Great product
Only reason I'm not giving all 5 stars, is for the following. My impact driver came with 2 batteries, this drill only came with 1. This makes it an inconvenience to use for large projects. That being said so far the quality and performance is great.

Good but with one problem
There is no doubt it is good value and performs very well. I would have rated it as excellent other than the fact that the variable speed trigger is not very precise at low speeds. This is especially important when using the tool as a screwdriver.
