Impact Drivers and Wrenches

Impact Drivers and Wrenches

An impact driver is used to drive a powerful rotational, downward force that loosens large screws that may be corroded. The impact driver can at times be used with hex-shank drill bits to create a hole, but this would not create a precise hole which is sometimes crucial. An impact driver is not like an impact drill as the driver has a keyless chuck that is used specifically to drive screws.

An impact wrench on the other hand is square and drives sockets. Usually more powerful that the impact driver, the wrench can use a 1/4 hex to a socket adapter, however, the power is at this point lower in terms of torque. The impact wrench is most popularly used for loosening lug nuts and is the preferred choice of mechanics working on cars and trucks.

Options for an impact wrench and driver include brands like Black & Decker, Bosch, DeWalt, Hitachi, JET, Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee, Porter-Cable and many others. Bare tools or kits are also available.
