Tool OK, but...
The trimmer arrived with the string spool loose in the box, looking like a clear nylon bird's nest, and no instruction/owner's manual. Rewound the string and installed the spool as it SEEMED it was supposed to go. Put in a battery, fired it up, and it made popping noises like a string of firecrackers, while shooting out tiny (and painful!) shrapnel. Hmmmm... Upon closer examination- and downloading the instruction manual & parts list- the spool assembly was missing a critical spring. Without the spring, the spool keeps feeding line, cutting it to length, and firing it out like tiny bullets. Makita sent a replacement spring and now it works fine.

Another good Makita product!
I was somewhat concerned with the single string design of the head, thinking that the dual string heads would do a better job, the single is just fine of our use - general yard trimming. Battery life is significantly better than the previous other brand cordless trimmer we had, but you do need to get closer to the work than with more powerful trimmers. Overall, it does exactly what we hoped, work as designed and last long enough to trim the average 0.25 Acre suburban yard!

Woks Fine
Not a powerhouse trimmer, but for what it is it works just fine. For doing the bit of weeds and tall grass around the edges of the property after mowing and maybe a small patch that the mower can't reach, but this isn't meant for clearing a swath of overgrowth that's been ignored for weeks or months, so don't expect it to do that unless you're prepared to spend a lot of time and energy doing it with the wrong tool. As long as it lasts for at least 5 years I'll be okay with it. It came with extra line which should last me as along as I own it.

I primarily purchased this because I already have batteries that fit it. If you don't already have your own batteries then you'd be better off getting something else for this price. Even then, getting one with a battery would be worth it if there's other tools you need because the amount of options for the Makita 18V system is just incredible.

Nice cordless trimmer
Nice tool for my small yard. I primarily use it to trim around the edge of my 1,500 sq. feet lawn. I have a bunch of Makita cordless tools and this fits right in. Plus, it should last for ever as it is a Makita.

Great for small yards
I was in need of a string trimmer, borrowing the neighbors was getting old. I did however learn that I didn't want a corded one. I was looking into a 2 stroke one, after talking it over with the wife, she expressed the concern about being able to start one, and that a electric one might be better for her to use when I go on deployments. I already had a Makita cordless drill/batteries and decided that would be the best way to go. As it turns out I made the right decision, the head is easy to fill with line, and install. The trimmer is very light weight. For the size of my small backyard, this fits the bill perfectly.

wish I would have bought this years ago
after watching my husband mess around attempting to fix our missed-gas Toro (as my yard continued to look shabbier and shabbier) I bought this in secret since he already had the Makita charger. It is so easy to use, light, and effective even he could not argue with my choice. We donated the Toro even after he fixed it.

Very nice
After dealing with the gas trimmers that were a pain, I tried a recommended Black & Decker 20 volt it worked good but battery life was poor, my dad has the same so he purchased an extra battery but the battery life of 2-battery's is still not good enough. I figured with all the 18 volt Makita battery's I have I can get the trimming done. First time using it I had a bigger than normal trim to do. To my amazement it completed the jod & the battery was still strong I love this trimmer low cost works like a champ.

Does the trimer have double or single lines?

BEST ANSWER: Single line.
Where can I get battery, one is not included. Went to Home Depot and battery and charger was $99
Tony on Apr 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Can be ordered through CPO best to purchase a multi tool combo like Drill, Saw & battery / charger. Great tools & value in the LXT line up I have many & like them all. The battery's work in all the LXT tools. If you want to save more look for sales, specials or recon deals. I gave away all my corded tools because of how happy I am with LXT.
Sent from my iPad
Does anybody know if a "prewound" spool exists for this? I know the string diameter is 0.065. Winding loose string is a pain!

Thx

BEST ANSWER: Bump and feed trimmer head model 123235-7.
What model battery(s) is needed for this tool. I can't find that information on the website. It should be plainly stated. I know there are different models of 18V Lithium ion batteries.
Richard the Handyman on May 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: All 18v Makita batteries will work with this trimmer, however I would recommend using the BL1830 or larger capacity battery since the amperage draw on this tool is higher than a simple drill, and using the BL1815 with this trimmer will lower the life cycle of that battery and they won't last very long. I use a 4.0ah BL1840 and I go through half a battery for my yard (~30mins continual use)
