Bought this edger and was very excited, Was the best product ever! until about six months down the road. Took both of my Troy built units to a small engine mechanic because they would not start, confirmed that I bought a sub quality product (the Carbs have issues with contact with Gas???). I whish that I would have read the reviews of others.......

I would like to see the directions to keep them running for a longer period of time, expected at least 2 years. not just six months

First summer with the new edger!!
Overall, the Troy-Bilt edger performed very well. I love the fact that it has a 4 cycle engine (no mixing gas with oil) with very smooth operation - virtually no vibration! It's also very easy to start. The only issue I have is that it doesn't seem to cut the grass along the sidewalk "cleanly". What I mean by "cleanly" is that have to go back and forth a couple of times to make sure all the grass blades are trimmed. Not a big deal, but it does take extra time.

Lawn edger vs lawn trimmer
I am very satisfied with this lawn edger. I have tried to use a trimmer to do the edging and could not get the results that come close to a real edger. Nothing looks better than a well trimmed lawn.

Best Edger
This is the easiest edger I have ever used. I can zip right through my edging in less time than I have ever been able to do in the past. It is a little harder to start the engine than I expected. It takes several pulls to start. I also purchased an electric starter and because it will only run for 4 seconds I have never been able to start it with the electric starter.

if you have some small edge work to do this will get it done and it doesnt take up much space in the garage either.

Throttle Cable Seized Up
Great little machine. But the throttle cable seized up after a year of use. For God's sake, shoot some oil down that cable! Can't fix, had to but a new replacement. Better yet, get rid of the cable, put the throttle control directly on the carburetor.

What type of oil is used for this edger?
Papa George on Aug 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Small engine oil can be purchased at any hardware store or big box,.Lowes or Home Depot.
I purchased the edger from Lowes. The first one choked out as soon as I powered up the blade, even though it was not in the ground. Lowes replaced it. The second one ran fine until I started edging with it. After about 5 minutes, it started doing the same thing. The gas is fresh and was just purchased last week, have been running other lawn equipment on the same gas. Any ideas?
Bob on Jun 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: you are not mixing oil with the gas are you. This is a 4 cycle engine
which runs on gas only. Just a thought since you said you were using
the same gas you use on your other lawn equipment.

The edger ran so good for a long time. Lately it's problem after problem. Recently the edger has been stalling while I'm cutting,so I took the blade off and checked the belt which is fine, the shaft is working well.
There even times when it seems to have no power. Could it be over heating, carb: is shot or something else.
