Generator FAQs

What is the difference between a standby generator and a portable generator?

A standby generator is a permanent installation that automatically provides power to a home or business during an outage. They typically run on natural gas or propane. A portable generator is a mobile unit that can be manually connected to appliances, various devices or a home’s power system and typically runs on gasoline or diesel fuel.

Is a standby generator worth it?

A standby generator is worth the investment if you live in an area prone to frequent or prolonged power outages. It provides reliable backup power in a time of need. It ensures your home or business remains operational without the need to manually start or refuel a portable unit.

What size portable generator will run a house?

To run essential appliances and systems in a house, you typically need a portable generator with a capacity of 5,000 to 7,500 watts. This size can power necessities like lights, refrigerators, sump pumps, and a few other key devices, depending on your energy needs. A standby generator is typically the best option for running a house in the event of an outage.

What size generator will power a refrigerator?

To power a refrigerator, a generator with at least 1,000 to 2,000 watts is recommended. This range provides enough starting and running wattage to keep your refrigerator operational during a power outage.

How long will one gallon of gas power a generator?

The runtime of one gallon of gas depends on the generator’s efficiency and load. On average, a generator can run 2 to 4 hours per gallon at 50% load, though this can vary based on the specific model and power output.

Portable vs Standby Generators

Portable generators are smaller, mobile units that can be manually moved and connected to your home or specific appliances during an outage. Most portable generators run on gasoline or diesel fuel. They’re a versatile and cost-effective tool to keep handy for emergency situations as they can typically power both small and large items.

Standby generators are permanently installed and connected to your homes electrical system. They’re built to automatically provide power during an outage. They run on natural gas or propane and offer peace of mind knowing you’ll have power during a bad storm or random outage. These are common in areas where power is regularly interrupted. While more expensive than portable generators, standby generators provide seamless, hands-free operation, making them more convenient but generally more expensive to install and maintain.

Understanding Transfer Switches

A transfer switch safely connects a generator to your home’s electrical system which allows you to switch from utility power to generator power during an outage. It isolates the circuits you want to power, preventing backfeeding, which can be dangerous for utility workers and your home’s electrical infrastructure.

Manual transfer switches require you to manually toggle the power source. Automatic transfer switches detect power loss and switch to generator power automatically, offering greater convenience. Installing a transfer switch ensures a smooth and safe transition between power sources, making it a critical component for both portable and standby generator systems.

Great generator from Quipall

Bought this just in time, was hoping to buy it and just have it for just in case situations and it has came in handy and paid for itself already. I've used it for 2 hurricanes 1 using it for over a week and the next about half a week. Then just an occasional power outage and now here I sit writing the review because it deserves it as we had an ice storm in Louisiana and been without power and it's going on running for 36 hours straight and haven't had the slightest problem with it. I will eventually upgrade to a bigger one but this one does just fine with running 2 heaters and alternating fridge and freezer with other little things for kids such as tv and DVD player.

Just what I needed

I don't normally write reviews of items I purchased online, but I have decided to break that norm just to help someone else who is circling units after units, brands after brands---just to make the right purchase of inverter generator. Trust me--I did the same circling and finally arrived at the decision to purchase the Quipall 3000i Generator. I did not know anything about this generator other than what I read---and it does exactly what was described and more. I am so happy with this purchase that I have decided to surprise my handyman uncle with a gift of the Quipall 3000i generator and like me--- he had been very ecstatic about its performance.

Very Impressive Inverter Generator

This drill shipped blisteringly fast. I was shocked it arrived the day after I ordered it. I was unable to tell it was reconditioned other than the sticker on top indicating it was a reconditioned unit. Came with the drill and factory hardcase box. I went right to work busting ceramic tiles and removing the mortar after that. This drill was able to work harder than I was and never cried about it. If you are looking for a hammer drill and decided this is the model, you'd be a fool not to buy the CPO reconditioned unit. This beast is $250 at the local Lowes. I did buy my bits there though
