Miter Saw FAQs

What are the most common uses for miter saws?

Miter saws are commonly used to create precise crosscuts and angled cuts in wood. That includes projects like cutting molding, trimming, and framing. A miter saw is essential for projects that require precision and consistent cuts.

Can a miter saw cut metal?

Yes, a miter saw can cut metal. However, it requires a special metal-cutting blade and should be used with caution. The miter saw is best suited for metals like aluminum and should always be used with proper safety gear and precautions.

What are the differences between a miter saw and a chop saw?

A miter saw is designed for precision cutting at various angles, typically on wood. A chop saw is generally used for straight cuts on tougher materials like metal and masonry. Chop saws offer more power but less versatility in angled cuts, which is where miter saws excel.

What is a compound miter saw used for?

A compound miter saw can be used to make both bevel cuts and miter cuts; and allows for angled cuts in multiple planes. This makes it perfect for the complex cuts required in crown molding, picture frames, and other intricate woodworking projects.

What is a dual bevel miter saw?

A dual bevel miter saw can tilt in both directions which allows you to make bevel cuts without flipping the workpiece. This is especially useful for complex tasks that require accurate and consistent angles.

Corded vs Cordless Miter Saws

Choosing between a corded and cordless miter saw comes down to your work environment and power needs. Corded miter saws offer consistent power and are great for heavy-duty, continuous use on a project. In contrast, cordless miter saws provide the convenience of portability which makes them perfect for quick, on-the-go tasks or projects in locations without easy access to power. One big downside is they may require additional batteries for extended use and can have less power than corded models.

Dual Bevel vs Single Bevel

The choice between a dual bevel and single bevel miter saw comes down to the complexity of your projects. A single bevel miter saw only tilts in one direction which is typically sufficient for straightforward bevel cuts like simple trim work. However, a dual bevel miter saw tilts both left and right, which allows for more complex, compound cuts. This is beneficial for tasks that require repetitive, precise angle cuts like crown molding or woodworking projects.

Compound vs Non-compound

A non-compound miter saw (standard miter saw) can make precise miter cuts—angled cuts across the width of a board—which makes it ideal for tasks like trimming, molding, and framing. However, a standard miter saw is limited to straight or angled cuts on a single plane.

A compound miter saw offers the added functionality of bevel cuts—angled cuts along the thickness of a board—by tilting the saw head. This versatility allows for compound cuts (a combination of miter and bevel cuts) in a single pass. This is crucial for more intricate work like cutting crown molding, furniture work, or any project requiring angled cuts on both planes. Compound miter saws come in both single and dual bevel models providing even more flexibility for complex projects.

7 1/4in Dewalt sliding compound miter saw 20V

Had a 12 inch Dewalt compound sliding miter saw which I loved but at 67 pounds it just got to hard for me to handle carrying it around. Purchased the 7 1/4in 20V. Approximately half the weight and I absolutely love it! Used it one time to repair a deck. Worked wonderfully, lots of power. I found the saw at Home Depot but they did not have them in stock nor did they know that be in stock. Went home and looked online. Found it at CPO outlets. Got it for $150 less than Home Depot no shipping and it was at my house within the week! Thank you so much CPO I cannot tell you how excited I am to have this saw.! it just for note-I am a 65-year-old grandma who loves to build. ??

Great Dual Slide Compound Miter Saw

The Miter Saw replaced an older 7 inch. The batteries last a very long time, all day no problem. I did get the extra set with the promotion. The Laser is bright and easily adjusted, but mine was right on the mark right out of the box. The dust collection with the rubber boot and dual hoses works very well. The detents on the table didn't need any tweaking. The tilt lock is located in front for easy access. Over my older saw, I really like the soft start and stop. The clear blade guard is nice. The always on Laser is much better then the blade mounted one. The 12 inch board capacity and the ability to dado are the main reasons I upgraded. The saw is much larger than my older saw. It does weigh quite a bit, but I have it mounted on a portable stand with wheels. So, my recommendation is for shop or job site use if you don't have to move it much. Even though it is heavy, it is alot easier to move than a stack of lumber.

Sensational Miter Saw!

Bought this Dewalt Mitre Saw for my son who just got back from 9 months in Afghanistan leading a SEAL platoon. I went to his home to help him set up his woodworking shop in the garage of the house he just rented and this saw was sensational. We were able to easily cut the legs for his work bench and had to cut blocks and shims for his table saw/router table combination, and it was super easy. Great, great, great.
