Impact Driver FAQs

What are impact drivers used for?

Impact drivers are used specifically for driving screws and bolts with high torque. They’re ideal for construction, carpentry, and other fastening tasks. They excel at handling tough materials like dense wood or metal, where standard drills may struggle.

What is the difference between an impact driver and a drill?

An impact driver uses rotational force with quick, powerful bursts of torque while a drill offers steady rotational force. While drills are more versatile for tasks like drilling holes and lighter fastening, impact drivers are ideal for driving in screws and bolts in difficult situations.

What should I not do with an impact driver?

An impact driver shouldn’t be used for precision drilling or delicate tasks. The torque can damage softer materials or strip screws quickly. It’s also not recommended for use with standard drill bits unless specifically designed for impact tools.

Are impact drivers necessary for DIY projects?

The short answer is no, they’re not necessary. However, they can be incredibly useful for tasks involving repetitive fastening or working with tough materials as they make driving screws faster and easier.

How do you use an impact driver?

Simply attach the appropriate bit, align it with the screw or bolt, and apply steady pressure while pulling the trigger. Let the tool's torque and speed do the work and avoid overdriving or damaging the fastener.

Drills vs Impact Drivers

Drills are great tools designed for creating holes and driving screws with consistent force. They’re ideal for precision work and common jobs.

Impact drivers are built for high-torque jobs as they deliver quick bursts of power to drive screws and bolts into tough materials like hardwood, metal, or concrete.

Hammer Drills vs Impact Drivers

Hammer drills are similar to impact drivers but combine rotational force with a hammering motion to drill into hard materials like concrete, brick, or masonry. These are tasks that an impact driver simply wouldn’t be able to handle which is why having both tools in your workshop is ideal for bigger projects.

What our customers are saying...

Powerful & Compact

This is one of many Bosch tools that I've purchased from CPO! I think I have about 4 drills and impact tools, saws, grinder, etc. all using the 18v system. This one is compact but very powerful. I used it right out of the bag to dismount 4- eight lug tires off or 5th wheel and reinstalled them after new tires were mounted on the rims. I carry it in my truck while traveling too.

Best Impact Driver, PERIOD!

I did a lot of research on this one, I was choosing between this and a Milwaukee. And this is the way to go, no issues with the chuck whatsoever, my estimation is that I've already changed mine over 100 times (different tips) and it works and feels just like day one.

Lightweight and Very Capable

I had the first generation of DeWalt's 12v MAX tools. This version is WAY better. It's excellent for any job that demands good torque and speed, but not the weight of the 20v MAX tools. I'm very happy with the overall performance. Batteries last a long time and are affordable. This tool line would be just the ticket for any home user or any contractor who works overhead or in tight quarters and needs a lighter drill/driver. Don't let the size fool you - these are real tools.
