Scroll saws are named for the maximum distance between the blade and back vertical part of the frame, that dimension is called the throat. A 16 inch model can fit a 16 inch board between the blade and the frame. The features to look at when selecting a scroll saw are how easily the blade attaches and tensions, the throat depth, and the upper work hold-down spring.
