Makita VJ05Z 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Barrel Grip Jig Saw, (Tool Only)

The Makita 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Barrel Grip Jig Saw (tool only, batteries and charger sold separately) delivers fast and efficient cutting, with a compact design that’s engineered for ease-of-use and maneuverability. It features a barrel grip design for closer-to-work cutting, and is ideal for woodworkers, cabinet makers, remodelers, and general contractors. Makita 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion slide-style batteries provide improved balance and ergonomics over pod-style batteries, and for convenience the batteries include an on-board L.E.D. charge level indicator (batteries sold separately).
The Brushless Barrel Grip Jig Saw has a compact and ergonomic design with less weight (only 3.9 lbs. with 12V max CXT 2.0Ah battery, sold separately). The efficient Makita-built brushless motor is engineered for longer run time, increased power and speed, and longer tool life. The variable 5-speed control dial (800-3,000 RPM) enables the user to match the speed to the application, and the 3 orbital settings plus straight cutting provide added versatility. The soft start suppresses start-up reaction for better accuracy, and the no-load speed reduction feature automatically reduces SPM for more accurate cutting starts. Convenience features include “tool-less†blade changes, large 2-finger variable speed trigger with lock-on button, dual L.E.D. lights, and a built-in dust blower to clear the line of cut.
For longer run time, all 12V max CXT cordless tools are also compatible with the 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion 4.0Ah battery (BL1041B, sold separately). 12V max CXT lithium-Ion batteries are engineered with a Battery Protection Circuit that protects against overloading, over-discharging and over-heating. It’s part of the expanding 12V max CXT series, combining performance with superior ergonomics in a compact size.

Light, Compact Jig Saw That's Easy to Handle
The Makita VJ05Z is a light, compact jig saw that's easy to use and control, being one of the two 12V brushless jig saws available at this time. Essentially, this barrel grip jig saw is very similar to the top-handle VJ06Z and weighs just 3.9 lb (with CXT 2.0Ah battery). It has 3 orbital settings plus straight cutting (selected via mechanical side lever), tool-less blade change, a 1 thru 5 speed setting dial (800 - 3000 strokes / minute), and the following electronic features:

- Soft start. The soft-start function allows the saw to start gradually, minimizing start-up shock.
- No-load speed reduction. When the speed dial is set at 2 or higher, the tool automatically reduces speed until the tool starts cutting, then accelerates (i.e. upon being loaded) and maintains the selected speed until stopping the tool.
When cutting soft materials (foams, thin plastics, etc.) that offer little blade resistance, the no-load speed reduction function can be disabled by a simple procedure. (With the tool off, set the speed dial to "1", press the lock / unlock button to power the tool, turn the speed dial to "5", and then immediately back to "1".) Disabling the no-load speed function (LED tool lights flash twice when disabled) causes the jig saw to operate like an ordinary variable-speed tool.

The only minor complaint is that some accessories (e.g. anti-splintering device, vacuum hose adapter, etc.) are not included. In fact, for some reason certain part no.'s are not even listed in Makita literature for these options. Otherwise, it's highly recommended.

Surprisingly powerful for a 12 V Jigsaw
I bought this to complement my 18 V jigsaw but having used it a few times in both plywood and solid wood and I have been pretty impressed by the performance to the point that I have hard time thinking when this wouldn't be appropriate. Really the only thing that I don't like about this is that the battery life is not great (even when using a 4 Ah battery). Here are the things I like about this saw:

1. It seems to me that there is a blower that combined with the LED keep the cut line really clean.
2. I prefer variable speed on a dial as it makes cuts more repeatable.
3. No load detection keeps the blade speed down when not cutting.
